Three
medical school graduates are accepted into Mercy’s Ob/Gyn residency program
each year. The quality of this fully accredited, well-designed residency
is largely attributable to a dedicated and experienced teaching faculty
committed to sustaining a one-on-one learning environment.
Residents
in the OB/Gyn program at Mercy gain experience with a wide variety of
patients, cases, and medical settings. A highly utilized institution situated
on Chicago’s near south side, Mercy attracts patients from some of the
city’s new upscale residential developments, oldest ethnic neighborhoods,
and largest subsidized housing complexes. As a result, Mercy residents
enjoy a diverse and ample caseload with numbers exceeding the national
averages.
Patient cases include a large
volume of general gynecological procedures and an average of 2600 births
annually, facilitated by a state-of-the-art 9-LDR suite. With a full service
neonatal nursery, perinatologists, and 24-hour in-house neonatologist
coverage, Mercy is well prepared for the volume of both normal and high-risk
obstetrics it handles. Residents also enjoy a collaborative relationship
with Certified Nurse Midwives.
The residents hold continuity
clinic in Mercy’s own community health center. In addition, the residents
have an opportunity to accompany the attending physicians to see patients
at the private offices. The department supports subspecialty clinics in
gyne-oncology, urogynecology, and maternal-fetal medicine as well.
