Three
medical school graduates are accepted into Mercy’s Ob/Gyn residency program
each year. The quality of this fully accredited, well-designed residency
is largely attributable to a dedicated and experienced teaching faculty
committed to sustaining a one-on-one learning environment.
Patient cases include a large volume of general gynecological procedures and an average of 2600 births annually, facilitated by a state-of-the-art 9-LDR suite. With a full service neonatal nursery, perinatologists, and 24-hour in-house neonatologist coverage, Mercy is well prepared for the volume of both normal and high-risk obstetrics it handles. Residents also enjoy a collaborative relationship with Certified Nurse Midwives. The residents hold continuity clinic in Mercy’s own community health center. In addition, the residents have an opportunity to accompany the attending physicians to see patients at the private offices. The department supports subspecialty clinics in gyne-oncology, urogynecology, and maternal-fetal medicine as well. Residents are actively involved in teaching medical students from three affiliated medical schools. This includes third year OB/Gyne clerkships as well as an elective in maternal fetal medicine. Residents also mentor family practice residents in the management of obstetrical patients. THE BIRTH
